Foster Homes URGENTLY Needed!!!
Can you provide a loving temporary home so that we can help save another dog's life? .... PLEASE contact us!!! Since the Etobicoke Humane Society doesn't have a dog shelter, we rely on the dogs owners to keep them until adoption, however if this is not possible we put the dog in foster care. Having a foster home available is often the difference between being able to help a dog in need or not. Costs are covered and it is a fun and rewarding way to help animals in need. If interested in fostering send an email to dogs@etobicokehumanesociety.com and we will send you a questionnaire to complete. Here are some things to consider for fostering:
-
We receive a variety of dogs, however, most are medium or large breeds (for example: Labs, Shepherds)
-
Must have experience with & some knowledge of dogs
-
Willing to allow people interested in adopting the dog to visit
-
Willing to transport dog to vet, etc if necessary (mainly within Etobicoke/west
GTA)
-
Access to email is helpful
-
No one in the house with allergies to dogs
-
No children under 8 years
-
Preferably have no cats as we do not always know how the dog will behave with cats.

About EHS
Etobicoke community relies on the Etobicoke Humane Society knowing that we are a Society which does not believe in or practice euthanasia (unless it is absolutely the only humane alternative), nor do we allow any animals to go to research. Many citizens of Etobicoke are still unaware that the community has its own Humane Society, or of the distinction between the Etobicoke Humane Society and the city-run shelter on the East Mall (Etobicoke Division of Toronto Animal Services). The Etobicoke Humane Society is committed to rescuing injured, abused, abandoned, and unwanted animals. We are run 100% by volunteers and operate solely through their offered service and fund-raising efforts; and donations from the general public. Our volunteer OSPCA Agents are trained and licensed by the province to investigate cases of cruelty to animals in Etobicoke.
Where are the pets?
Operating with an office and a cat adoption center, we must rely on foster homes and the work of our dedicated volunteers to find forever homes for dogs. Arrangements are made in advance to meet a dog.
Adopting a friend
The Etobicoke Humane Society takes certain steps in order to make the dog adoption process successful for all involved:
- Visit our pet list on this site, email us at
dogs@etobicokehumanesociety.com
or call our Office at 416.249.6100, ext 2. Let us know which
pet(s) you are interested in, and don't forget to leave us your email, telephone number and best time to reach you.
- A volunteer will return your call/email within 24 hours.
- If you would like to see one of the dogs we have for adoption, we will send you an application form and conduct the preliminary interview over the phone. The purpose of the interview is to help you decide if the dog you have chosen is best suited to your family and/or lifestyle. It is also to help us determine your suitability as the dog's new guardian. Then you will be given the phone number of the dog's foster home in order to make an appointment to see the dog.
- It is important for all family members to meet the dog at some point before the adoption. If you have a dog currently, it should meet this new dog outside the home so that they are on neutral territory for both dogs.
- If you wish to adopt the dog after the initial meeting, you will be asked to contact us. A volunteer will call you back to complete the interviewing and answer any questions you might have.
- We a recommend a second visit with the dog at your home to ensure the dog interacts well in your home environment.
- A volunteer will meet with you to sign the papers and collect adoption fee.
$200 Dog Adoption Fee includes :
-
Vaccinated within the last 12 months
-
Spaying or neutering (if the dog is less than 6 months old, a $25 rebate coupon will be provided)
-
Microchip for identification if dog becomes lost
-
Helps offset other costs for the dog you are adopting and other animals (vet bills, foster care, transportation, administration).
